Steig’s classic word game – now available in color!

C D C ? = See the sea?
E-R I M ! = Here I am!
U F B-D I-S = You have beady eyes.

To figure out William Steig’s word puzzles, you need merely read the letters, numbers, and symbols aloud. If at first the messages are unclear, there’s a clever picture accompanying each to give you hints. Originally published in 1984 with black-and-white drawings, this title is given new life in this full-color edition painted by Mr. Steig. Also included for the first time is an answer key at the end.

Horn Book Magazine
A companion volume to the popular C D B! (Windmill), published nearly twenty years ago, Steig's latest compilation of puzzlers defies age -- or grade-level classification; larger, longer, somewhat more sophisticated in content than its predecessor, the book has a transgenerational appeal -- provided that children are willing to share it with adults. As in the earlier book, letters and numbers which suggest the sounds of words or phrases are printed as captions for interpretive cartoons. The combination is irresistible, luring the reader from riddle to riddle until "D N." But translating the text is only half the fun, for the illustrations are more than helpful clues. Characterized by a marvelously fluid, expressive line -- finer than that used for C D B! -- they gently satirize familiar situations and clichés or hint of a story about to begin. What, for example, are the togaed citizens of ancient Rome thinking as their guide conducts "A 2-R F D 4-M"? Flawlessly executed, purely pleasurable, the book is definitely "D Q-R" for doldrums at any season. And the price is unbelievably low - making the book accessible for a wide range of riddle lovers and punsters.
